LOD 400

LOD 400 pipe models and fabrication drawings

LOD 400 is the level a piping model has to reach before a shop can build from it. Dorseth Pipe Detailing delivers its models and drawings at that level.

What LOD means

LOD stands for Level of Development. It says how complete a model element is and how far it can be relied on. The scale comes from the BIMForum LOD Specification, which BIM execution plans and contracts across the US refer to.

  • LOD 200Approximate size and location. A placeholder: a pipe about here, about this big.
  • LOD 300The specified size, shape and location. Enough to coordinate the design.
  • LOD 350Adds how the element connects to what is around it: other trades, supports, equipment.
  • LOD 400Adds what it takes to fabricate and install it: the exact parts, spool breaks, welds and cut lengths. The shop builds from it.
  • LOD 500A field-verified record of what was actually installed.

What is in the model

  • Real partsEvery pipe, fitting, flange, valve and gasket at its catalog dimensions, to ASME B16 and the manufacturer’s data.
  • SpoolsThe piping broken into spools, each with its own number, piece marks and numbered welds.
  • Cut lengths and materialA cut length for every piece of pipe and a bill of material for every spool.
  • SupportsSupports detailed for the shop to MSS SP-58, with steel cut lists, hardware and coatings.
  • Vacuum-jacketed pipeThe inner line and the jacket detailed together.
  • EquipmentModeled to its size and nozzle locations, enough to connect pipe to.

What you can do with it

  • FabricateBuild spools straight from the sheets, with every length on the sheet.
  • Order materialBuy from the bill of material instead of a separate takeoff.
  • CoordinateCheck the piping against steel, duct and the other trades before anything is cut.
  • Track weldsFollow every weld through fabrication and inspection by the numbers on the weld map.
  • InstallSet the piping from dimensions tied to field benchmarks.
  • Prefabricate moreMove work from the field into the shop, where it is faster and easier to inspect.
